Earlier this summer, Educational Media retired the Kaltura service and transitioned all video recordings to Panopto. As part of the transition, they also implemented an updated Panopto Video Retention Policy, effective July 31. Under the new policy, the overall Panopto video content storage timeframe will be extended beyond 3 years and will operate in two phases:
Phase I: “Live” Format (2+ years)
Uploaded video content will be stored in a live format for a minimum of 2 years and will be accessible to all users who have the necessary permissions. Viewing stored content while in live format will reset the 2-year clock, so recordings could remain in live format beyond 2 years. If live content has not been viewed in a span of 2 years, it will automatically be transitioned to “Archived” status
Phase II: “Archived” Status (3 years)
Once archived, video content will be stored for an additional 3 years. During this time, the content can only be viewed as a thumbnail by the owner. However, if the owner wishes to restore the content to “Live” format, they can make a request within their Panopto archive. Please note that it may take up to 48 hours for Panopto to process the restoration request. After 3 years, any video content that is not returned to live format will be cleared from the server.
We highly recommend that you review your archived recordings to ensure that you retain desired content before it is cleared from the server. For steps on how to restore archived content, please review Panopto’s resource on How to Restore Archived Content.
