University computers receive automatic software updates on a regular basis to ensure that operating systems remain up to date with the latest enhancements, fixes, and security patches. Many of these updates require a restart to apply the changes and complete the installation. Information Technology Services (ITS) sets the automatic restart time to occur during off-hours, usually overnight. However, each computer must remain turned on during the scheduled restart time for the reboot to happen. If your University-issued computer is not powered on, the installation cannot be fully completed (Note: A computer that is turned on, but logged off will still install updates).

When there are pending updates that have been deferred for too long due to the computer being off, a restart may take place automatically once the computer is turned back on, or anytime thereafter.

To prevent an unscheduled restart of your computer, ITS recommends doing weekly checks to always make sure your computer operating system is up to date. If updates are available, install them and restart the device to avoid a possible unexpected restart later.
